Pharmacological action: iodine is the raw material of thyroid hormone synthesis. When the human body is iodine deficient, the thyroid body presents compensative hypertrophy, causing endemic goiter, which can be prevented by iodized salt (containing 0.001%-0.02% potassium iodide in salt) or kelp and other seafood containing organic iodine, or by intro injection of iodized oil. Small dose of iodine as iodine supply raw material to synthesize thyroxine, correct the original pituitary thyrotropin secretion too much, and make the enlarged thyroid gland shrink. Can treat local goiter. Large doses of iodine have an anti-thyroid effect, especially in patients with hyperthyroidism. However, due to its short time of action (up to 2 weeks), and when taken for a long time, not only the effect disappears, but also can aggravate the condition, so it cannot be used as a routine antithyroid drug.
Solubility: soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, methanol, acetone, glycerin and liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline.
